Çoğu kadının başına gelebilen bu durumun gerçekleşmesinin nedeni sadece kanserle ilişkilendirilmez. Genellikle hormonal sebeplerden kaynaklandığı görülmektedir.
Göğüsten gelen bu sıvı sarımtırak, yeşile kaçan veya renksiz, sütlü akıntı şeklinde görülebilir. Uzman görüşlerine göre, göğüsten gelen bu renk akıntılar kanser belirtisi değildir. Eğer akıntı kanlı bir şekilde gelirse buna çok dikkat edilmelidir. Çünkü bu tarz akıntıların bazılarında kanser tespit edilmiştir. Uzmanlara göre özellikle yapılmaması gereken şey ise akıntı geldiğinde akıntının başladığı yeri sıkarak çıkmasını devam ettirmektir. Kesinlikle yapılmaması gereken bir davranıştır.

Göğüste bulunan süt bezleri hamilelik söz konusu olmasa bile sıvı salgılayabilir. Bu yüzden anormal bir durum olarak görülmeyebilir.
- Yaş faktörü önemlidir. 40 yaşın üzerindeki kişilerde görülebilir.
- Meme başının fazla uyarılması nedeniyle sıvı gelebilir.
- Prolaktin hormonu hamilelikte salgılanmasına rağmen hamilelik dışı durumlarda da düzensiz bir şekilde salgılanabilir. Bu hormonun artışı süt gelmesine neden olabilir.
