Boyun bölgesinde ani bir şekilde beliren çoğu zaman yağ bezesi görüntüsünde olan bastırılmasında ağrı ve acı duyulmayan şişlikler oluşabilir. Bu şişlikler çoğu zaman iyi huylu ya da kötü huylu tümörlerden kaynaklanmaktadır. Tümörün yayılmaması için hızlı bir şekilde parça alınarak test edilmeli ve gerekli ise cerrahi müdahale ile tümörün o bölgeden alınması gerekmektedir.

Boyun bölgesinde meydana gelen şişlikler akut olarak genellikle üst solunum yolları enfeksiyonlarından kaynaklanmaktadır. Üst solunum yollarından kaynaklanan şişlikte genellikle boğazda yutkunurken zorlanma ve diğer hastalık belirtileri eşlik etmektedir. Hastalığın tedavi edilmesi için gerekli ilaçların kullanılması, iltihabın azalmasına bağlı olarak boyun bölgesindeki şişlikte azalmaktadır.
Tiroid kaynaklı boynun ön sağ kısmında oluşan şişliklerde tiroid hormonunun kandaki düzeyinin ölçülmesi ve gerekli tedavi yönteminin belirlenmesi belli bir süre sonra tiroid bezinin eski haline dönmesini sağlamaktadır. Bazı durumlarda tiroid bezinin bir kısmının cerrahi müdahale ile alınması gerekebilir.
Doğumsal bozukluklarda özellikle gırtlağın yanlış pozisyonda ya da normalden daha fazla büyüklüğe sahip olması boynun ön kısmında şişlik oluşmasına sebep olabilir. Böyle bir durum çoğu zaman ameliyat ile normal haline dönüştürülür.
